Sussenguth 1920s' Description The company Gebruder Sussenguth was best known for their series of Peter bears. A hundred of these bears were discovered in a closed down store in East Germany in 1974 and werebrought to England to be sold. These hundred examples appear to be the only ones that exist, and are therefore very rare. This particular bear is a fabulous example of the Peter bear, in that he is in excellent condition, with his chest tag intact (it reads, ""Peter" Ges. gesch. Nr. 895257), his paw pads in mint condition, as well as his mouth, tongue, teeth and nose. His eyes are of wood and will rotate as you move him. He is 5-way jointed and all joints are moving well. Peter is stuffed with wood wool and kapok. His head was constructed from a carton, pressed into shape and stapled together, and the plush was added afterward. Peter's mohair is mottles brown. He has complete coverage with only minor thinning along his back seam, on the top of his right arm wear it connects to his body, on his seat, and the top part of his chest seam above his tag. He is 14"tall. According to Sue Pearson and Dottie Ayers, in their book "Teddy Bears, A Complete Guide to History, Collecting and Care," page 51, the value of this bear is approximately $5300.00.
